Background: More than 1,400 of the thousands of stateless Asians ordered out of Uganda by President Idi Amin, have been issued with emergency travel documents by the United Nations Centre for Documentation, Assistance and Transportation Arrangements during the weekend of 28-29 October. The Centre, operated by the U.N. High Commission for Refugees, was only opened yesterday (Saturday), when more than 650 applications were received. After completing medical examinations nd other formalities, the majority of them were issued with International Red Cross travel documents which will enable them to leave the country by 8 November - the deadline set by President Amin. Another 757 registered today (Sunday).

An estimated 5,000 stateless Asians will have to be flown out before the deadline expires - apart from the thousands of British Asians who are being handled and resettled by the British Government and Commonwealth countries. This is still no precise indication when the air-lift of stateless Asians to Europe will begin - but it is understood that a U.N. Secretariat meeting is taking place in New York tomorrow (Monday), to finalize the arrangements for staging camps throughout Europe.
