  • Description

The first baseball stadium to be built in China was officially opened in Peking City with a match between a visiting team from the Aichi Industrial University of Japan, and a Chinese team made up of soldiers of the People's Liberation Army. As the game is so new in China it is not surprising that the Chinese Army team lost by 17 to 1. As the game was played on the Chinese principle "Friendship first, and result second", the host team did not feel too bad about it.

According to the Chinese National Athletics Federation, baseball stadium will be built in each district of Peking, Although the first stadium to be completed has not yet been given an official name, it is as big as any top-class Japanese or American baseball stadium.

The stands have a capacity to seat about twenty thousand spectators, and the scoreboard and backnets conform to international standards. Although there is not yet lighting for evening matches, the stadium is equipped with a public address system and the conventional touch-line accommodation for players.

Construction work on the stadium began on 4 July, and it was completed within a month by the voluntary efforts of workers, farmers and student. It is only a year since baseball was first introduced to China, and therefore the spectators are still not familiar with the rules of the game. Consequently as the inaugural match progressed a commentary over the public address system explained what was happening.
