Background: President and Mrs. Kennedy entertained 49 Nobel prize-winner to dinner at the White House, April 29. Mr. Kennedy described the gathering as the greatest collection of intellectuals ever gathered in the White House.

All the prize-winners present were from the Western Hemisphere and represented all aspects of science and literature.A highlight of the evening was a 30-minute reading by actor Frederic march that included excerpts from an unpublished novel by the late Nobel prize winner, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway's widow was there to hear it. Present also was atom scientist Linus C. Pauling who had been at the White House earlier - as a picket demonstrating against nuclear testing.
