  • Description

Officials and scientists of the USA and the USSR attended a ceremony in Moscow last Thursday (10 June), at which moon samples scooped up by US astronauts were exchanged for lunar soil brought back to earth by Russia's unmanned Luna-16. The exchange will give the scientists of each country a more comprehensive understanding of the moon, as the samples come from different parts of the lunar surface.

SYNOPSIS: In Moscow on Thursday, scientists and officials of the United States and the Soviet Union met to exchange samples of the moon's surface.

The exchange will enable the scientists of each country to make a more comprehensive analysis of the moon's surface, as the rock samples come from different parts of the moon.

The exchange was arranged by the Academy of Science of the USSR and the National Space and Aeronautics administration of the USA. Mr Vinogradev, the Vice-President of the USSR Academy and Mr Sherer of the American space bureau took part in the ceremony.

The Americans handed over two bags of lunar soil. One is from the first manned mission of Apollo-11 in 1969, and the other from Apollo-12. In return the American scientists were given a sample of lunar soil scooped up automatically and ferried to earth by Russia's unmanned Luna-16.
