Background: TWO WOULD-BE TRANS-ATLANTIC ROWERS WERE BACK ON DRY LAND TODAY (SATURDAY) AFTER SPENDING ONLY EIGHT HOURS AFLOAT. THEY SAID WATER FROZE IN THEIR BOAT BEFORE THEY COULD BAIL IT OUT.

FORMER LORRY DRIVER AND LOBSTER FISHERMAN, LEWIS MILLS, AGED 54, AND HIS 21-YEAR-OLD SON, LEWIS JUNIOR, BOARDED A COAST GUARD VESSEL AS DARKNESS FELL LAST NIGHT.

FATHER AND SON SET OUT YESTERDAY FROM THE GLOUCESTER HARBOUR, MASSACHUSETTS, IN THEIR 16-FOOT (FIVE METRE) DORY.

THEY HAD MADE ONLY 16 MILES (25 KMS) OF THEIR PLANNED ROW TO BRITAIN IN FREEZING COLD AND CHOPPY SEAS BEFORE MR. MILLS SENIOR FINALLY SAID, "THE HELL WITH IT."
HE SAID THEIR BOAT WAS TOO HEAVILY LADEN AND THEY STARTED SHIPPING WATER. IT FROZE BEFORE THEY COULD BAIL OUT. NEWSMEN SPOKE TO HIM BEFORE HE SET OUT:
MR. MILLS SENIOR SAID TODAY HE MIGHT TRY AGAIN, ALONE AND IN WARMED WEATHER. HE SAID HE MIGHT TAKE HIS SON ALONG IF HE CAN GET A BIGGER BOAT.
