  • Description

Prime Minister Macmillan celled the Cabinet to Downing Street Oct 12 for their first meeting since the Government's return to power for a new five-year term.

The Prime Minister was not expected to make any major changes among the top ranks of the Government but some observers hinted Colonial Secretary Lennox-Boyd - blackened in Africa over the Hola camp murders - might have a new post.

Anti-Conservative observers also rumoured Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd might receive a new appointment but Macmillan gave an assurance after his election victory he would take the same ministerial team to the summit.

Likely changes considered were an end to the name of "Colonial Office" - as some territories viewed the name in bad odour. This Office might be merged with the Commonwealth Relations Office into one Ministry for Commonwealth Affairs. Another new Ministry likely was for Science.

The final position of the parties in the new House of Commons - convening Oct 27 - is Conservatives and Allies 356, Labour 258, Liberal 6 and Independent 1. (At the dissolution: 341, 281, 6 and 1 respectively).
