  • Description

Security forces outnumbered supporters of Portugal's Conservative Centre Democrats (CDS) when the party -- expected to come third in the forthcoming parliamentary elections -- staged a rally in the small southern town of Vendas Novas on Sunday (18 April).

Lorry loads of troops from the Vendas Novas artillery regiment stood in eucalyptus groves, mounted troopers sheltered from the rain under trees, para-military national guardsmen with walkie-talkies controlled key positions in the town and five armoured personnel carriers waited in front of the main square.

They watched a gathering of 80 people -- including a group of seven official CDS speakers.

The speakers denounced Portugal's land reform and the break up of Lisbon's colonial empire and promised an economic revival and a Christian society if the CDS were elected to power.

There was no trouble at the rally which broke up peacefully when the Easter market began in a nearby field.

SYNOPSIS: Portugal's Conservative Centre Democrats (CDS) staged their first rally in the small southern town of Vendas Novas on Sunday.

The party -- expected to come third in the country's forthcoming elections -- didn't exactly take the pro-communist town by storm. Only 80 people braved the light rain and listened to the seven CDS speakers.

In fact security forces outnumbered supporters. Troops, mounted troopers national guardsmen and armoured personnel carriers surrounded the muddy square where the rally was held. Naturally, there was no trouble. The speakers denounced Portugal's land reforms and the break up of Lisbon's colonial empire. They promised an economic revival and a Christian society if the CDS was elected to power.
