  • Description

London's Ideal Home Exhibition, at the Olympia buildings, saw an Australian highlight, Mar 18, when a panel of well-qualified judges selected "Miss Wonderland" from the 84 girls staffing the Commonwealth's colourful "Down-Under Wonderland" stand.

Marks for good looks, poise, personality and grooming were awarded by Australian actor Vincent Ball, Lucie Clayton of model school renown, beautiful fashion model Clemence Bettany, and Australian-born Margaret Vyner, wife of actor-playwright Hugh Williams. The panel awarded honours to 22-year-old Merri Carmichael, who hails from a sheep-station in the western district of Victoria.

In the evening, "Miss Wonderland" and her Australian "ladies-in-waiting" joined High Commissioner Sir Eric Harrison and screen celebrities like Sir Alec Guiness, John Mills and Peter Sellers at the "London Pavilion" Gala Film Premiere of Ray Lawler's stage-hit "The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll".

Most of the film was shot in Queensland's sugar-cane fields, where John Mills and Ernest Borgnine were initiated in the art of cane-cutting. Husky Vincent Ball, from Wee Waa, no doubt felt a little more at home on location.
