    Following the Belgian Congo's recent provincial elections, the Leopoldville Province Assembly held its first meeting in Leopoldville, June 1. Newly elected members gathered to choose their President of the Assembly, and to receive formal instruction on their duties and rights.

    On Independence Day - June 30 - the Leopoldville Province Assembly and the assemblies of the five other provinces will take over provincial administration from the Belgians.

    While results of the National Assembly elections are still awaited, the provincial elections resulted in 27 per cent of the provincial assembly seats being won by the National Congolese Movement, led by Mr. Patrice Lumumba, now the Congo's strongest supported leader.
