Background: United States Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Elliot Richardson met with Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Takeo Miki, in Tokyo on Thursday (27 May) for discussions which included the Lockheed bribes scandal.
The Japanese political establishment has been rocked by the scandal, with admissions from the U.S. that Lockheed, the giant aircraft manufacturer, paid out millions of dollars to further sales of its aircraft in Japan.
The day before the meeting, Mr. Miki announced he would dissolve Japan's Lower House in the Diet (Parliament) and hold a general election as soon as the Lockheed bribes scandal was cleared up. However, Mr. Miki is facing strong moves from within the ruling Liberal-Democratic Party to oust him from the premiership.
Mr. Miki has replied to his critics by continually stating that he will never abandon his task and responsibilities half way through his term of office.
According to news reports Mr. Richardson took a special interest in Thursday's meeting because it is he who will be sitting as chairman of the committee investigating the activities of U.S. multinational corporations outside the country.
Discussions between the two officials also included science, technology and issues affecting developed and developing countries.
During his four day visit, Mr. Richardson will also meet Foreign Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and Minister for International Trade and Industry, Toshio Komoto.
