Mao Tse-tung was born in the remote hunanese village of Shao-Shan 77 years ago. Today, this once backward and inaccessible place has become a focal-point for visitors from all over China and abroad.
There was'nt even a road into Shao-Shan when Mao Tse-tung was born. The future Communist leader made all his early journeys around his home province on foot.
Today, a motor road brings in visitors by the thousands. On peak days in the summer, 10,000 people tour Shao-Shan. They visit Chairman Mao's ancestral home, a substantial cottage in a pleasant corner of the now prosperous valley. The cottage has been completely restored since political enemies killed or imprisoned all members of the Mao family during the Chinese revolutionary war.
Visits to Mao Tse-tung's birthplace became increasingly popular during the Cultural Revolution. Groups of youthful Red Guards assembled at Shao-Shan before beginning long walking tours of China to spread the thoughts of Chairman Mao and advocate radical changes in the conduct of the government and the economy.
