  • Description

Former world champion Phil Read of Great Britain, riding a Yamaha, won his first 250 cc international motorcycle TT race in the Isle of Man yesterday. Read averaged a speed of 98.02 mph over the 150.92 miles course.

The win was Read's first TT victory since 1968 when he took the 125 cc crown. He now leads in the world championship with 30 points -- nine ahead of Gyula Marsovsky of Switzerland who finished a poor sixth in the 250 cc test.

Read, a heavy favourite going into the race, took the lead midway through the first lap and was never again headed. Two other Britons, Barry Randle and Alan Barnett, finish second and third respectively.

SYNOPSIS: The competition was the 250 cc race on the Isle of Man and the man to beat was Britain's Phil Read.

Riders from ten nations were entered in the 58-man field. But it was number 8 Rod Gould of Britain -- the world champion -- who Read had to watch.

The cheering crowd watched as Read riding a Yamaha roared around the first turn followed by Gould who was destined to finish fourth in the contest.

Averaging better than 100-miles per hour on the straight aways, the riders slow down considerably on the turns. The winding course around the island stretches for slightly over 150 miles. But from the looks of the weather these riders will not come close to the course record of 103.07 miles per hour set in 1967. The condition of the track affected the performance of Gyula Marsovszky, number 10, of Switzerland who trails Read in the running for the world championship. And the crowd knows it.

The riders are pre sing coming into the final turns. And the crowd is up on its feet as roaring through, taking the winning flag is Phil Read. Read takes the plaudits of the crowd, and the traditional greeting reserved for winners, before posing with second and third place finishers Alan Barnett in the centre and Barry Randle.
