    THE DECISION OF PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS, TO SEND AN ENGINEERING BATTALION OF VIETNAM, HAS MET WITH STRONG PROTEST. IN MANILA HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS AND WORKERS DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE DECISION.

    SOME OF THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED PLACARDS DENOUNCING THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN. SOME OF ITS LEADERS USED A PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM TO VOICE THEIR PROTEST.

    STUDENT ASKED WHY THE PRESIDENT WAS SENDING THE BATTALION WHEN IT WOULD COST THE PHILIPPINES SOME 35-MILLION PESOS (ABOUT GBP3.5-MILLION STERLING). THEY SAID SOME OF THIS MONEY COULD HAVE BEEN USED TO RETAIN THOUSANDS OF CASUAL EMPLOYEES WHICH THE PRESIDENT LAID OFF FROM GOVERNMENT SERVICES WHEN HE STEPPED INTO OFFICE ON DECEMBER 30.

    LATER HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE, INCLUDING WAR VETERANS, DEMONSTRATED IN FRONT OF CONGRESS IN SUPPORT OF THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN TO SEND THE BATTALION.

    THEY WERE JOINED BY STUDENTS AND LABOUR LEADERS. AMONG THE SPEAKERS WAS MRS YAY MARKING, WIFE OF FILIPINO GENERAL MARKING, OF WORLD WAR II FAME.
