Students in Cambodia are trained from an early age to be capable of defending their school and university grounds. Recent campus attacks by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese have highlighted the need for this training as a vital aspect of self defence.
Whenever the Viet Congo and North Vietnamese troops are not in control of an area, the Cambodian schools are operating....but all students are required to show their passes before being allowed into the school or university grounds.
Classes have been continuing more or less normally, but at Kompong Cham 5 students were killed when Communist forces invaded and occupied a campus recently. Since then, and because this is the period of final examinations, extra precautions have been taken, and students are stepping-up weapon training. Some of the Cambodian Government's most enthusiastic support has come from the students who, not only have defended their campuses, but have often spent their free hours working directly with the military. Many help man extra vehicle check -- points into the city as there is a great fear of terrorist infiltrators carrying explosives.
For the students, the defence of Phnom Penh is all the more urgent as hundreds of students from areas where schools have been forced to close have come to the city to sit vital examinations.
