  • Description

Retired Argentine army General Carlos Omar Acts, who was shot dead by left-wing guerrillas on Thursday (19 August), was buried in Buenos Aires on Friday (20 August).

SYNOPSIS: The funeral was held at the Metropolitan cemetery and General Acts was accorded full military honours. Among the mourners was Argentine President Jorge Videla.

Security precautions were tight - with police marksmen posted on rooftops. The death toll from political violence has reached at least 663 since the military seized power in Argentina in March and the bloodshed shows no sign of abating.

General Acts was killed after recently being appointed head of a state committee which is organising the 1978 world soccer cup in Argentina. His death was followed by a wave of murders, believed to be the work of right-wing extremists acting in revenge. 30 mutilated bodies were found near Buenos Aires on Saturday. (21 August).

Later that day left-wing guerrillas attacked three police stations and bombed targets throughout the capital. Sources quoted by Reuters news agency link the attacks with the fourth anniversary of the "Trelew massacre", in which 17 left-wing guerrillas were killed by their prison guards.
