Background: INTRODUCTION: In Rome, angry women's liberationists have held a demonstration outside the High Court protesting at the treatment given a rape victim by the authorities. The victim, who was twice gang-raped is the first to be named in public trial in Italy.
SYNOPSIS: The demonstration took place on Monday (4 April). The women's liberation groups were protesting about a Justice Department official who said the rape victim may have faked one of the attacks on herself. The girl was raped last August by 16 youths - seven youths were due to appear in court for the second time on rape charges in connection with the girl.
Following the Youth's first appearance, the 18-year old girl claims a second gang of four from the original group again abducted her and raped her, in revenge for having the others brought to trial.
The liberationists are also protesting because a public prosecutor said injuries the girl received may have been self-inflicted. They claim the authorities are using the girl's case as an attack on the entire women's liberation movement in Italy.
