  • Description

The Czechoslovak national ice-hockey team won its first match against Canadian professionals in Prague on Tuesday (8 October) when it managed to slam home three goals against the Canadians' one.

Czechoslovakia, playing their first international of the season, scored twice in the first period. The Canadians looked third in this, the final game of a strenuous European tour - they lost their game against the USSR in Moscow two days previously - but they rallied in the second period to reduce the Czech lead to 2-1.

Any hopes the Canadians had of drawing level were killed by the third Czech goal scored by Haas 6 minutes before the end of the match. The other Czech scorers were Jiri Bubla and Ivan Hlinka, and the Canadia goal came from Webster.

The game held in the Sporting Hall, Prague, was watched by 14,700 spectators, including Czechoslovak Communist Party leader Gustav Husak and the country's Prime Minister Lubmir Strougal.

It was the final game of the Canadian team's tour of Europe. Other match venues included the USSR, Finland and Sweden.
