  • Description

ARMED TROOPS WERE ON ROOFTOPS IN THE CENTRE OF ARMAGH YESTERDAY (21 FEBRUARY) AS AN ESTIMATED 2,000 CIVIL-RIGHTS SUPPORTERS TOOK PART IN A 'MARCH FOR JUSTICE' THROUGH THE TOWN.

THE MARCHERS DEMANDED THE ARREST OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE FATAL SHOOTING LAST AUGUST OF MR. JOHN GALLAGHER, A RESIDENT. THEY ALSO WANTED THE RELEASE FROM PRISON OF A LOCAL CIVIL-RIGHTS LEADER.

A WREATH WAS PLACED IN THE SHAMBLES AREA OF THE TOWN WHERE MR. GALLAGHER WAS KILLED. THE CEREMONY WAS WATCHED BY HIS WIDOW, MRS. JEAN GALLAGHER, 28, MOTHER OF THREE CHILDREN.

EARLIER THE AUTHORITIES HAD FEARED A MAJOR CLASH BETWEEN RIVAL FACTIONS AND MORE THAN 500 TROOPS AND POLICE WERE ON DUTY IN ARMAGH, NINE MILES FROM NORTHERN IRELAND'S BORDER WITH EIRE.

THE MARCH HAD RECEIVED THE APPROVAL OF THE AUTHORITIES BUT THERE WERE FEARS OF AN ILLEGAL COUNTERMARCH BY PROTESTANT EXTREMISTS.
