  • Description

Fifty-nine people ware killed when a Lufthansa Jumbo jet crashed on take-off from Kenya's Embakasi Airport, near Nairobi, on Wednesday (20 November).

It was the first fatal crash involving a Jumbo jetliner. The giant aircraft burst into flames soon after hitting the ground, but 98 passengers and crew managed to scramble to safety before the flames completely engulfed the plane.

Most of the survivors owed their lives to the hostesses and stewards of the German airline who pushed people down rescue chutes.

Others crawled through holes in the gaping fuselage which ripped apart as it hit the ground.

Eyewitnesses said the plane appeared to lose power after it had climbed only about 100 feet (about 30 metres).

It then plunged down, tail first, into wasteland at the end of the airport.
