Background: In Spain, an accident during a public flying exhibition killed the chief of the Spanish Air Force's helicopter training school on Thursday (29 June).
SYNOPSIS: A number of helicopters from the training school took part in the display. It was held at Cuatro Vientos air base a short distance from the capital, Madrid.
Just before the accident, these two helicopters were seen moving close together as they were about to land.
Their rotor blades collided. Seconds later the machines caught fire. The pilots tried to run to safety. One of them succeeded, but Colonel Luis Terrados Jarabo was struck by the spinning rotor blade.
Fire engines were quickly on the scene of the accident, as spectators watched in horror.
Another helicopter joined in the rescue operation....
But despite their prompt action, the rescuers could do nothing to save Lieutenant-Colonel Luis Terrados Jarabo, who was in charge of the Air Force's helicopter training school. Officials said he was one of the most experienced and accomplished helicopter pilots in the country.
