    SOME 50 MILES FROM MYSORE CITY, INDIA, IS A NEW TOWNSHIP FOR REFUGEES WHO FLED FROM TIBET BEFORE AND AFTER THE DALAI LAMA'S FLIGHT. THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA IN ITS REHABILITATION PLAN CHOSE THE TOWN OF BYLAKUPPE FOR THEM - FOR ITS SIMILARITY OF CONDITIONS IN TIBET, WITH PLEASANT WEATHER, MOUNTAINOUS COUNTRY SIDE AND GREENERY. ABOUT 5,000 REFUGEES WERE BROUGHT HERE, AND THE NEW TOWNSHIP SPRANG UP IN A FEW MONTHS ON OVER 35,000 ACRES OF LAND LEVELLED BY HUGE BULL-DOZERS.

    THE REHABILITATION PLAN PROVIDED EACH REFUGEE FAMILY WITH FIVE ACRES OF LAND AND A REMAINING 500 ACRES FRO COMMUNAL USE. EACH FAMILY TOO RECEIVED A HOUSE, A BULLOCK, AND AGRICULTURAL TOOLS TO START A NEW LIFE OF FARMING. OTHER WORK WAS ALSO BEING ENCOURAGED TO HELP SUPPLEMENT THE REFUGEES' INCOME FROM THE LAND.

    SCHOOLS, A HOSPITAL AND A COOPERATIVE SOCIETY WERE ALSO BUILT. IN THE SCHOOL NOT ONLY TIBETAN BUT ENGLISH AND HINDI ARE TAUGHT. THERE ARE LESSONS TOO FOR CARPENTERS, SMITHS, HANDICRAFT WORKERS AND DANCERS FOR THE ANCIENT FESTIVALS OF TIBET.

    ON THE EVE LAST MARCH OF THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE TIBETAN UPRISING, THE DALAI LAMA CLAIMED THERE WERE 70,000 TIBETAN REFUGEES IN INDIA, NEPAL, SIKKIM AND BHUTAN, AND APPEALED FOR MORE WORLD AID TO ASSIST IN THEIR REHABILITATION.
