  • Description

Thousands of militant Loft-wing demonstrators packed Lisbon's main square, the Rossio, on sunday morning (26 May) to demand an end to what they called Portugal's "colonial wars" in Africa. Leaflets handed out before the demonstration claimed the new Government wanted to defend the "Colonialist and imperialist economic, political and military interests" by delaying the search for a ceasefire in Portuguese Guinea, Mozambique and Angola.

Demonstrators also demanded the release of Cuban Army captain Pedro Rodriguez Peralta, who is being held under guard in a Lisbon military hospital. Peralta is alleged to have aided guerrillas in portuguese Guinea. He was jailed for 10 years and one day in June 1972, and is now receiving treatment for a paralysed arm.

The protests were organised by extreme Left-wing organisations, including Trotakyists and proletarian groups. They coincided with talks in London between Portugal's new Socialist Foreign Minister, Dr. Mario Soares and guerrilla leaders aimed at ending 11 years of conflict in Portuguese Guinea.
