Jordan commemorated the fifth anniversary of the Kar??? battle against the Israelis on Wednesday (21 March). This battle in 1968 was the biggest confrontation between the Jordanians and the Israelis since the June War in 1967.
It came when a powerfully-mounted Israeli offensive across the Jordan River against the guerrilla camp at Karameh met with strong resistance from the Royal Jordanian Army and guerrillas. Later, Jordan protested to the United Nations.
This year the only official ceremony took place at the Army Martyrs' Cemetery where the Commande??? in Chief of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Habes Majali, and other high-ranking officers laid wreaths on the graves of the officers and men who died in the battle.
