  • Description

The Republic of Chad celebrated the first anniversary of the National Movement for Cultural and Social Revolution on Tuesday, 27 August.

During the celebrations, President Ngartha Tombalbaye, the movement's Secretary-General, called on his colleagues to examine their consciences and also criticised the country's transport and hospital systems.

During his hour-long address, the President said he cherished a dream of building 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) of sealed roads in the republic.

President Tombalbaye launches the movement last year with the aim of taking his countrymen back to their origins.

At the time of the celebrations, officials were predicting improved crops after five years of drought. However, unexpected heavy rain in the last few days which promised to revive Chad's cotton crop, has now brought a new natural disaster.
