Background: Hundreds of sightseers - who had packed the local hotels and inns for weeks - flocked to the picturesque baroque church at Altshausen, West Germany, July 21 for the marriage of Duke Carl, heir to the Pretender of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, with beautiful Princess Diane of France, daughter of the Comte de Paris, the French Pretender. It was the year's biggest wedding in French and German society.

At the ceremony, performed by the Bishop of Wurttemberg, Dr. Sedlmeier, Princess Diane was radiant in a Dior gown with a special head-dress styled "Louis-Phillipe". Members of the Wurttemberg royal family have been christened, married and buried for generations in the same village church.

Some 280 guests were invited to the wedding including ex-King Umberto of Italy, ex-King Simeon of Bulgaria, the Prince of the Asturias from the former Spanish Royal family, Duke Charles of Luxembourg and most members of the exclusive circle of Germany's highest nobility.

Duke Carl and Princess Diane first met four years ago, when they were guests aboard the Achilles, the yacht of Queen Frederika of Greece. They were both students.

There were two marriage ceremonies: the first, a civil ceremony, took place at Altshausen Castle July 18. The couple will make their home at Schloss Friedrichshaven, the Wurttemberg family's summer residence on the shores of Lake Constance.
