SYNOPSIS: Two hundred thousand farmers, workers, students, athletes and members of women's organisations have paraded in Teheran during week-long celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the Shag's so-called "White Revolution". The revolution was designed by the Shah, Mohammed-Reza Pahlavi, to implement social and economic reforms... a plan seen by observers as being largely successful...Similar celebration parades were being held in provincial cities throughout Iran.

The hammer and anvil is the emblem of industry in Iran... a fact of national economy the planers are determined to bolster. Although Iran is a very rich nation, the wealth comes from the vast oil reserves... reserves which will be depleted over the next twenty years. With this in mind the government is encouraging industrialization and the development of new export markets.

The farmer who took part in the parade clearly had something to celebrate as well... the new five year plan, which comes into force in March, gives greater priority to agriculture and social projects. The plan sets out to increase the average annual income per person to more than eight hundred pounds....four times the present figure. Meanwhile the people celebrate their gains of the last ten years.
