    The heir to the throne of Thailand, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, entered the Buddhist monkhood in a special ceremony on Monday (November 6). Following the tradition of his father, the Prince will spend fifteen days at Wat Boronrnivas, the royal temple. And with the other monks he will go into the streets every day in search of food from the faithful, whose donations earn them hope for a better after-life.

    SYNOPSIS: The ceremony took place at the Emerald Temple in Bangkok.

    The Prince, with his newly shaved head and eyebrows was ordained by the patriarch, who presented him with his saffron monks robes. He will become defender of all religions when he succeeds to the throne.

    The ceremony was attended by China's Deputy Prime Minister Teng Hsiao-Ping, in the country on an official visit. He and members of the Royal Family presented simple gifts to the Prince.

    The Crown Prince is twenty-six years old and a captain in the Royal Thai Army. Under the Buddhist tradition his two weeks in the monkhood will transform him from a Khon Dip - Thai for raw man-into a mature adult.

    Following his ordination the Prince was carried to the temple in an ornate chair to begin his devotions.
