  • Description

A Japanese rocket, carrying an experimental satellite, was launched form the Kagoshima Space Centre at Uchinoura on Saturday (16 February). Less than an hour after blast-off, the satellite was delivered into its. correct orbit 200 miles above the earth.

The guided rocket, a three-stage MU-3C, is the first to be built and launched in Japan, During the fifty-minute period when the three stages were propelling the satellite towards outer space, ground controllers were able, for the first time, to make course corrections using a new guidance system.

The launch was carried out under the auspices of the University of Tokyo's Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science. Three Previous satellites, sent into space by the Institute, failed to enter their required orbits because there was no rocket guidance system.

Devices for measuring the position of the satellite and the performance of the carrier rocket, are the only instruments on board.
