    The Women's European Rowing Championship finals on the Welsh Harp, London, UK, Aug 14 saw an almost clean sweep for Eastern European competitors.

    J. Paap (Hungary) won the single sculls for the third successive year in 4 mins, 0.4 secs., with Z. Rakitakaia (USSR) second. Germany broke the East European monopoly of successes, winning the quadruple scull in 3 mins. 39:6 secs, but highlight of this event was a fine finishing burst by the Rumanians, who came up form last to second place in the final minute's rowing. In the eights event, a powerful Russian won in 3 mins. 23.7 secs, with Germany second, far behind in 3 mins 32.06 secs.

    The USSR also won the double sculls and coxed fours.
