    "We support the Palestinian cause."

"They were surrounded by explosives. They don't want me to leave. They say, Amin you are now leaving, you are leaving right away and therefore they want me back in Uganda to solve the problem. (indistinct) For the first time from Tel Aviv, I have been tele??? from Tel Aviv. ??? Several telephone calls from Tel Aviv taking to me since I have cut off relations with Israeli because of the hostilities. But I want to tell you that it was not my intention to take the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine to bring the hostages to Uganda. But I accept them to land there because of humanitarian grounds. And also (applause) it was the first time for the history of the hijackers in the world that the hostages move from the aeroplane and are put in a comfortable place which never happen anywhere."

Background: Uganda's President Idi Amin has strongly condemned Israel for its commando action to free hostages held by Palestinians at Enebb??? Airport. He also criticised Kenya for allowing the Israeli aircraft to land at Nairobi for emergency medical treatment and refuelling. At the time of Saturday's (3 July) attack, President Amin was returning to Uganda from the Organisation of African Unity summit in Mauritius.

SYNOPSIS: Earlier the Ugandan President made his departure speech as outgoing Chairman of the OAU. He commented on the hijacking which at that stage was still unresolved.

President Amin made it clear where African sympathies were directed in the Middle East.

He also commented on the condition of the hostages.

On his return to Uganda, President Amin said 20 members of the Ugandan armed forces were killed and 32 were wounded. He said the Israelis had killed Ugandans instead of thanking them for the facilities they were providing for the hostages.

The new OAU President, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, now faces the problem of how the Organisation will react to the Entebbe incident. President Amin has already called on African nations to condemn Kenya for allowing the Israelis to use Nairobi Airport facilities.
