  • Description

India and the Soviet Union today (August 9) signed a major friendship treaty, under which each country will consider an attack on one as an attack on both. It was signed by Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, shortly after his arrival in Delhi on an official visit, and Indian Foreign Minister Mr Swaran Singh.

On his arrival, shown in this film, Mr Gromyko and his wife were greeted at Delhi's Palma Airport by Mr Singh, other top officials, and a crowd of about 4,000 members of India's pro-Soviet Communist Party.

After the treaty signing, under the terms of which neither side will supply arms to an aggressor threatening the other, Mr Gromyko held an hour's meeting with Prime Minister Mrs Gandhi. Other topics which will feature during Mr Gromyko's talks with top-ranking Indian officials are the thaw in relations between Peking and Washington, and the East Pakistan crisis. It was not yet known today how long Mr Gromyko will stay in Delhi.
