Background: While Europe freezes in an unusually severe winter, the Paris fashion houses are providing a ray of sunshine with their Spring collections. On Monday (22 January) it was the turn of Nina Ricci to unveil what they believe the well-dressed European woman will be wearing in a few months' time.
SYNOPSIS: The Ricci collection was described as "neo-romantic with the inspiration coming from the impressionist painters". The inevitable "little black dress" has undergone something of a transformation, with crossed back-straps, a below-the-knee cut and buttons on the back vent.
The mauve jacket here displays one of this Spring's main features -marked shoulders, but achieved without the benefit of padding. The dress itself is optimistically short-sleeved with girlish hip-pockets.
The painting on the wall could be a pattern for the flowing dresses that follow. In flame and crimson satin, the off-the-shoulder, back-less, evening dresses justify the designer's use of the collection's key word - impressionist.
