    Background: PARIS, FRANCE

A delegation of North American Indians, representing a so-called six-nation Iroquois Confederacy, has staged a news conference in Paris, attempting to attract support for their opposition to U.S. government proposals which they claim will affect their nation. The conference for the Haudenosaunee was sponsored by former Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella who is gaining a reputation for supporting minority groups, particularly if the opposition is a powerful, developed nation. The Indian group already has sent a protest letter to President Reagan, claiming that legislation to be considered by Congress will, if passed, destroy any present legal rights Indians have to their land, and violate any right to future claims. They point out that the United States has made more than 375 federally ratified treaties with Indian nations, and that every single one has been broken by the government.
