Much of the Ivory Coast's electrical power comes from thermal power plants. Last Wednesday (20 October), the country's largest power plant was officially opened in the capital, Abidjan.
SYNOPSIS: The plant was built with French and Italian assistance and Ivory Coast officials say it is the most developed of its kind in the entire African continent. It forms part of a major industrial complex.
The running of the plant is controlled from a central monitoring unit. A number of advanced techniques have been installed, notably in the area of regulation and automatic control of the burners and turbines. This has greatly increased the capacity of the plant which now has an estimated output of 200 megawatts. This provides sufficient electrical power for most of the Ivory Coast's industries.
The output of the plant will mean that the country's main industries will be able to increase their production. Such an increase plays a major part in the Ivory Coast's plans for economic growth.
