  • Description

A GROUP OF NORTH VIETNAMESE VILLAGERS, WHO HAVE BEEN FORCED TO FLEE FROM THEIR HOMES FOUR TIMES IN 14 YEARS BECAUSE OF NORTH VIETNAMESE AND VIET CONG MILITARY ACTIONS, HAVE TAKEN UP TEMPORARY RESIDENCE IN A REFUGEE CENTRE IN SAIGON WHILE THEY CONTINUE THEIR SEARCH FOR A NEW HOME. THE 2,000 REFUGEES -- ALL ROMAN CATHOLICS -- AND THEIR VILLAGE PRIEST, FATHER NHAN, HAD TO LEAVE THEIR LAST VILLAGE IN CHOLON, SEAR THE NOTORIOUS Y BRIDGE, WHEN IT BECAME THE SCENE OF A PITCHED BATTLE LAST MAY.

IN 1954, THE VILLAGERS LEFT THEIR HOMES IN THE NORTH VIETNAMESE CENTRES OF NAM DINH AND HAI PHONG AND FLED TO SOUTH VIETNAM, WHERE THEY SETTLED NEAR SAIGON FOR A SHORT TIME.

THEY MOVED TO THE TAY NINH REGION, AFTER VIET CONG ATTACKS, AND FROM THERE FLED TO A PLANTATION. AFTER FURTHER VIET CONG ACTION, THEY MOVED TO THE CHOLON VILLAGE IN 1966 AND STAYED THERE UNTIL THE MAY OFFENSIVE.

EVERYWHERE THEY HAVE GONE, THEY HAVE NAMED THEIR VILLAGE NAM HAI -- A COMBINATION OF THE TOWNS IN NORTH VIETNAM THAT WERE ONCE HOME.

FATHER NHAN SAID HIS PEOPLE WERE REFUGEES BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT LIVE WITH COMMUNISM AND THEY COULD CONTINUE TO RESIST COMMUNISTS SO THEY COULD LIVE FREELY.

SINCE MAY, THEY HAVE LIVED IN A FORMER SCHOOL, UNTIL THEY CAN RETURN TO THEIR REBUILT VILLAGE IN CHOLON BUT ALTHOUGH UNITED STATES AUTHORITIES ARE HELPING IN THE REBUILDING, THEY ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO RETURN FOR SOME TIME. MUCH OF THE VILLAGE WAS BADLY DAMAGED DURING THE FIGHTING, AND ROADS SCARRED BY SHELLS HAVE STILL NOT BEEN REPAIRED.

MEANWHILE, FATHER NHAN IS ARRANGING WORK FOR HIS PEOPLE. SOME ARE EMPLOYED IN WORKSHOPS NEARBY, WHILE OTHERS ARE MAKING TEXTILES, HATS BASKETS AND MATTING.
