  • Description

EDUCATION MINISTERS FOR FOUR FRENCH-SPEAKING CENTRAL AFRICAN STATES MET IN BRAZZAVILLE THIS WEEK(26-7 APRIL) TO WIND UP THE AFFAIRS OF THE NINE-YEAR-OLD FOUNDATION FOR CENTRAL AFRICAN HIGHER EDUCATION (FESAC).

OPENING THE MEETING, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE EDUCATION MINISTER HENRI LOPEZ SAID THE FOUR COUNTRIES, CHAD, GABON, THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC AND HIS OWN, HAD DECIDED TO SET UP THEIR OWN NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES. THE FOUNDATION WOULD THEREFORE BE DISSOLVED AT THE WISE OF THE FOUR COUNTRIES.

"THE DECISION HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN BECAUSE OF INCOMPATIBLE FEELINGS BETWEEN THE FOUR COUNTRIES", M. LOPEZ SAID. HE SUGGESTED A HIGHER COUNCIL SHOULD BE SET UP WITH A PERMANENT SECRETARIAT TO PROMOTE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE FOUR COUNTRIES IN SUCH FIELDS AS EXCHANGES OF PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS, AND JOINT RESEARCH PROJECTS. THIS WAS AGREED BY THE FOUR COUNTRIES.

HE ADDED A HOPE THAT OTHER AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES WOULD JOIN THE NEW COUNCIL.

EDUCATION MINISTERS AT THE MEETING WERE M.JEROME OKINDA, OF GABON, M.MAIDOU OF CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, AND M.DIKUA-GARANDI OF CHAD.
