  • Description

Memories of the Malpasset Dam breaking over Frejus set off the evacuation of 6,000 residents in eight villages this week from the valley below the 55-year old Chantegrelle Dam near Ahun, Central France.

Engineers set up flood lights on the dam wall to keep a round-the-clock watch for cracks after a minor side-wall gave way. The 45-metre high wall continued to hold Oct 6 but the water level was still over the danger mark. Excess water, built up by torrential rain, poured over the top of the dam wall. The sluice gates were unable to cope with the excess.

Elsewhere in France, floods in the devastated regions of the south-west were subsiding leaving farmers and townspeople to count their losses. Latest reports reduced the number of dead from 10 to 7 with two missing. But a new wave of storms struck the south-east and the swollen Rhone River was in danger of pouring into the surrounding countryside.
