  • Description

MORE THAN 25 YEARS AFTER THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF THE MALAYSIAN PENINSULA BRITISH TROOPS ARE STILL CLEARING THE PENANG AREA OF WARTIME BOMBS.

THE MISSILES ARE AERIAL BOMBS, SEA MINES, TORPEDOES, DEPTH CHARGES, SHELLS AND OTHER EXPLOSIVE DEVICES WHICH WERE KEPT IN WIDELY SCATTERED STORAGE TUNNELS AND PITS ON PENANG ISLAND. THE BOMBS RANGE IN SIZE FROM 60 TO 500 KG.

CLEARANCE WAS STARTED BY A BRITISH SAPPER SQUADRON IN 1956 BUT HAD TO BE ABANDONED IN 1957. NOW ANOTHER UNIT OF AN OFFICER AND 22 MEN IS ON THE JOB.

THERE ARE TWO MAIN GROUPS OF TUNNELS INVOLVED IN THE OPERATION. ALL SUSPECTED SITES ARE FIRST SEARCHED, LARGELY BY THE USE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT, TO DETERMINE THE PRESENCE OF BOMBS.

ANY BOMBS FOUND ARE TAKEN OUT TO SEA AND DUMPED - 25 MILES FROM PENANG.

SO FAR MORE THAT 2,200 BOMBS AND OTHER DEVICES HAVE BEEN DUMPED. AND THE BRITISH DON'T EXPECT TO HAVE THE AREA CLEARED FOR ANOTHER 10 MONTHS.
