  • Description

Peter Townsend, 44, and Marie-Luce Jamagne, twenty - year old Belgian tobacco heiress, called a press conference Oct 11 at the Jamagne's villa near Antwerp to talk about their wedding plans. But most of the time, Townsend - former equerry at Buckingham Palace where he met Princess Margaret, whom he hoped to marry four years ago - declined to give straightforward replies.

He said no date or place had yet been set for the wedding ceremony. Asked if Princess Margaret had sent him congratulations on his engagement, film-maker Townsend said he could not answer that. Would the wedding be a religious or a civic ceremony, or both? "A delicate question", Townsend said, "I would rather not answer".

He has known Marie-Luce since she was 14. She is Roman Catholic, he Protestant and divorced. His ex-wife is still living (there are two sons: Giles 17 and Hugo 14) and the Catholic religion does not recognise divorce. The village priest at Braaschaat has said the couple cannot marry in any Roman Catholic church in Belgium.
