Background: Riot police Wednesday (26 March) dispersed a demonstration of about thirty thousand French wine growers who were protesting against imports of cheap wine.
The demonstrators marched through the streets of the Mediterranean port of Sete, setting fire to a railway wagon and pushing a car into a canal before being dispersed.
Six thousand riot police were on duty during the demonstration.
The growers said they were dissatisfied with Government moves to reduce cheap wine imports from Italy.
The National Confederation of Wines and Spirits Traders agreed to suspend almost all wine imports for a month, but leaders of the wine growers union said this was not enough.
About thirty people including ten policemen were injured during the demonstration.
