  • Description

Quebec Provincial police on Monday ( 28 December ) made an early-morning raid on a snow-bound farm-house near St. Luc, a village 20 miles ( 30 Kms ) south-east of Montreal, to arrest four men, including three prime suspects in the October 17 kidnapping and subsequent murder of Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte.

Quebec Justice Minister Jerome Choquette later confirmed the arrests.

Quebec Provincial police arrested brothers 27-year Paul and 23-year-old Jacques Rose, 23-year-old Francis Simard, and 30 year-old Michel Vigor. The first three were named in police warrants shortly after Mr. Laporte's body was discovered on October 17 in the boot of an abandoned car.

Detectives said the men were found in a 25 by 4 foot ( 7 by 1 metre ) shelter they had tunnelled under the farmhouse. The farmhouse had been searched by police on Christmas Day, but nothing out of the ordinary had been discovered.

A detective said the hiding-place of the men was well camouflaged, its entrance being under a concrete slab in the furnace-room floor. Police had kept the house under surveillance, and decided to move in again for a more thorough search when a light was spotted in the building.

Quebec Justice Minister Jerome Choquette's confirmation of the arrest came only a few hours after the farmhouse raid.
