CLARK "As an individual human being, I am so sure I am right in this. So sure that it is imperative that the hostages be released now. It is so important to the fulfilment of the Iranian revolution, which it is damaging in a hundred ways.

It is so important to the individual justice and rights of the hostages, and it is so important to peace on earth, that I offer, today, to take the place of any hostage, if that will help resolve this tragic crisis. Thank you."

Background: A former United States Attorney General, Mr. Ramsey Clark, has told a conference in Iran that the abortive American attempt to rescue the hostage was a 'lawless military expedition' and 'an assault on Iranian territory'. Mr Clark was part of an unofficial U.S. delegation to a special conference on American interference in Iranian affairs.

SYNOPSIS: The United States State Department has dismissed the conference as a propaganda circus. They also have insisted that Mr. Clark was not in any way a representative of the U.S. government.

Delegates from fifty nations heard Mr Clark condemn the attempt to free the hostages, and also the United States' support for the deposed Shah. He said that the seizure of the hostages was understandable but wrong, and it was damaging the Iranian revolution. Mr Clark who appeared at the conference in defiance of President Carter's ban on travel to Iran, made an emotional appeal of the release of the hostages.
