  • Description

The Algerian President, Houari Boumedienne, has criticised the policies of Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat. Speaking at the opening of the Algerian Trade Union Congress in Algiers on Saturday, (25 March) President Boumedienne said Mr. Sadat had recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital while even the Americans did not dare to do so.

SYNOPSIS: Meeting at the Palais des Nations in Algiers, the Algerian Trades Union Organisation is the first of the country's mass organisations to hold its congress in preparation for the National Liberation Front party's annual meeting later this year.

President Boumedienne told more than a thousand delegates that he had no support for Mr. Sadat's visit to Israel. The President said, "We were told that the Arabs were victorious in 1973, and now the victors of 1973 have give to occupied Palestine, to Israel as they said, to sell Palestine."
It was the first time President Boumedienne had publicly attacked what he described as President Sadat's "Surrender policies".

President Boumedienne said "We told Sadat: The day when you are not in agreement with the Palestinians, we will not be in agreement with you anymore." He told the applauding congress that day had now come.

Despite the policy attack he said he had no personal animosity against President Sadat.

Speaking of the U.S. attitude to Israel, President Boumedienne did not reproach them - they had their own interests to preserve, he said.

It was the fifth Trade Union congress since independence in 1954 and the President announced a 30 percent increase in the minimum wage. He also called on delegates to strive for increased production.

President Boumedienne made it clear that Algeria is a one party country and that there was no room for "liberalism".
