  • Description

Senegal's President Leopold Sedar Senghor addressed two important meetings in Dakar on Monday (29 March).

His first speech was delivered at a conference of the "Countries of the Franc Zone", and his second at a meeting of the "Friends of the Sahel Club".

President Senghor opened the meeting of the Franc zone countries which attended by finance ministers from the 13 member countries: Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Cameroun, Senegal, Central African Republic, Congo, France, Gabon, Upper Volta, Chad, and Togo.

He asked France to understand the problem of "stabilising prices and improving export income for African countries".

"The Franc zone is a privileged framework for working together which goes well beyond the mere monetary aspects of co-operation," he said. The meeting will last for two days and consider topics arising from the recent French decision to float its currency.

Later in the day, the Senegalese leader co-chaired a meeting of the newly formed "Friends of the Sahel Club" with Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah. The club was founded to protect the Sahel region of West Africa -- one of the world's poorest areas -- from future drought.

President Senghor said the club aims to "foster increased co-operation among donors".

SYNOPSIS: The Dakar conference centre was the scene of a conference of "Countries of the Franc Zone" on Monday. Senegalese President Leopold Sedar Senghor opened the conference, which will run for two days and consider topics arising from the recent French decision to float its currency. Finance ministers from the 13 member countries of the group attended the opening session. President Senghor told them that the Franc zone was a "privileged framework for working together". He also asked France to understand the problem of "stabilising prices and improving export income for African countries".

Later that afternoon President Senghor had more official duties -- co-chairing a meeting of the "Friends of the Sahel Club" with Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah. The club was formed two weeks ago to protect the Sahel region of West Africa -- one of the world's poorest areas -- from future drought.

President Daddah told delegates that the purpose of the meeting and the club itself was to find "further means of fighting drought".
