    The traditional Palm Sunday mass was celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, by Pope Paul on Sunday (11 April).

    Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week in the Roman Catholic Church. It recalls Jesus Christ's entrance to Jerusalem, when crowds laid down palm leaves and olive branches before Him.

    After his blessing, the Pope distributed palm and olive branches to the Cardinals and Bishops present at the service.

    The mass comes a week before the major event in the Roman Catholic Church --- Easter --- celebrating Christ's crucifixion.

    SYNOPSIS: St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City -- where the traditional Palm Sunday mass was celebrated on Sunday Pope Paul led the mass which marks the start of Holy Week in the Roman Catholic Church. It recalls Jesus Christ's triumphant entrance to Jerusalem when his way was strewn with palm branches.

    The congregation was made up of Cardinals and Bishops of the Church coming from all parts of the world. In part of the celebration, they received palm fronds from the Pope.

    The mass was delivered by the Pope in the traditional language -- Latin.

    Palm Sunday comes a week before the major event in the Roman Catholic calendar -- Easter. This celebrates Christ's crucifixion and resurrection on the third day.
