  • Description

FRANCE TODAY (SUNDAY) CELEBRATED BASTILLE DAY, WHICH COMMEMORATES THE FALL OF THE BASTILLE AND THE START OF THE 1789 REVOLUTION. IN PARIS, THE CELEBRATIONS WERE HIGHLIGHTED WITH AN IMPRESSIVE MILITARY DISPLAY, FEATURING ARMOURED UNITS, GROUND TROOPS AND THE GENDARMERIE.

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE, HIS GENERAL'S UNIFORM SOAKED BY RAIN WHICH FELL THROUGHOUT THE MORNING, TOOK THE SALUTE AS SOME 6,000 MEN MARCHED PAST THE DAIS. HIS NEW PRIME MINISTER, MAURICE COUVE DE MURVILLE AND MEMBERS OF HIS CABINET STOOD AT THE GENERAL'S SIDE.

NINE SUPERSONIC JET TRAINERS OPENED THE PARADE AS THEY SURGED OVER THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE AND SCREAMED DOWN THE CHAMPS ELYSEES, UNFURLING LONG TRICOLOUR SMOKE TRAILS ONLY 150 FEET (50 METRES) ABOVE STREET LEVEL.

THEN CAME THE VANGUARD OF POLICE MOTORCYCLISTS, FOLLOWED BY ARMOURED SQUADRONS OF THE GENDARMERIE, THE PARAMILITARY BODY WHICH FORMS ONE OF THE ELITE FIGHTING BODIES IN THE FRENCH ARMED FORCES.

THE PARADE CAME ONLY A FEW HOURS AFTER POLICE HAD AGAIN CLASHED WITH STUDENTS IN THE STREETS OF THE LATIN QUARTER AND IN THE BASTILLE. MORE THAN 20 PEOPLE WERE INJURED DURING THE NIGHT AND SOME 40 WERE DETAINED. THE STUDENTS HAD BEEN PROTESTING THAT THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY WAS NOT JUST A "GAULLIST AFFAIR".
