  • Description

The Zambian President, Kenneth Kaunda, has called for a military victory in Rhodesia by the end of the year. He was speaking to a crowd of three thousand Zambians who had gathered at the Ndola airport to welcome Mr. Samora Machel, the visiting Mozambique president.

SYNOPSIS: Doctor Kaunda said the states of Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia must continue to provide reliable rear bases for patriotic front, or Rhodesian nationalist, troops. This, he said, would enable the troops to finish their job by the end of the year.

Mr. Machel came to open a trade fair but the two leaders were expected to continue talks on the guerrilla war in neighbouring Rhodesia.

Mozambique has recently come under repeated attacks from Rhodesia. Voicing new fears about possible attacks from Rhodesia. Voicing new fears about possible attacks on his country, Dr. Kaunda said the only reason he had not sent troops to Mozambique's aid was that Zambia itself would then have enemy troops moving in. He and the Mozambique president had held talks on the guerrilla war in Rhodesia only one week before the present visit. In Ndola President Machel received a pledge of solidarity from the Zambian president.

During the opening ceremony of the trade fair in Ndola, Mr. Machel was made an honorary freeman of the town. The two leaders later flew to Gabon for the Organisation of African Unity summit. While he was in Ndola Mr. Machel urged closer economic co-operation among the states bordering Rhodesia. He envisaged and opening of markets and division of labour.
