  • Description

Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, on a five day tour of Arab capitals, met Egypt's President Anwar Sadat on Thursday, (16 November). During their hour long meeting, President Sadat briefed the Italian leader on the latest developments in the Middle East peace negotiations and later told newsmen that Signor Andreotti had said Italy supported Egypt's peace moves 100 percent. Later Signor Andreotti flew on to Jordan.

SYNOPSIS: Prime Minister Andreotti arrived in Egypt on the second leg of a four nation visit, aimed particularly at improving trade relations between Italy and Arab nations. The Italian delegation met with an Egyptian party headed by Premier Mustapha Khalil before a private meeting between Signor Andreotti and President Sadat. After the discussions Signor Andreotti spoke with newsmen at Cairo Airport.

Prime Minister Adnreotti said that he had no intention of trying to mediate between Arab nations, but that he wanted to do as much as he could to remove differences after hearing the Egyptian point of view.

Signor Andreotti said that he had, during his visit to Libya, explained Italy's attitude on the Middle East peace negotiations and would be doing this during his visits to Iraq and Jordan.

After leaving Egypt, Signor Andreotti and his 12-man party travelled to Amman in Jordan, becoming the first Italian Prime Minister to visit Jordan. Because of internal trouble in Italy, Italians have lost close contacts with Arab countries and are keen to revive them, say Jordanian government officials.

Prime Minister Andreotti and his delegation were greeted at Amman airport on Friday (17 November) by the Jordanian Prime Minister Mr. Mudar Badran. During five hours of talks, Signor Andreotti was expected to discuss ways of boosting economic co-operation between the two nations and of increase in tourism. The Middle East peace talks were expected to be discussed with the Jordanians briefing Signor Andreotti on the results of the Arab conference in Baghdad earlier this month and their support for its resolutions.

Prime Minister Andreotti and his party were due to leave Amman for Iraq on Saturday (18 November 1978).
