Background: A Dutch Customs official is dead and two others are wounded after a shootout on the Holland- West German border on Wednesday (1 November). Details about the attack were at first sketchy, but authorities from both governments are saying the shootings involved a couple who later escaped from the area in a hijacked car.

SYNOPSIS: Shortly after the attack, the body of the customs official still lay where he was gunned down. According to police in West Germany, the shooting began after a customs patrolman spotted a man trying to climb over a border wall into Germany. The man opened fire, killing the officer, and a woman in some nearby bushes began shooting at other patrolmen.

Initially, Dutch police were saying the man and woman were in a red station wagon, and began shooting when they were approached by the authorities. But it was later learned the couple commandeered a Baker's van in West Germany and drove back into Holland, while a fourth border guard sounded the alarm. Hundreds of Dutch and German police have been combing the area. So far, they have found the abandoned van but not the couple.

They believe the couple may be linked to a terrorist group or possibly with drug-running. Holland, and especially the city of Amsterdam, is one of Europe's major centres for the sale and distribution of illicit drugs.
