  • Description

More than 5,000 students staged an anti-U.S. demonstration in Bangkok on Friday (4 July) protesting against the U.S. military presence in Thailand and the shooting of a student on Wednesday (2 July).

The rally was a peaceful one. Five hours after it started the huge crowd at the Thamasat University were still listening to anti-American speeches.

Organisers of the demonstration--coinciding with U.S. Independence Day--earlier called off original plans for a street rally outside the American Embassy in Bangkok.

On Wednesday, a Thai student was shot dead in the east-central town of Korat where the US Air Force has one of its four bases in Thailand. press reports said the student was shot in his car while distributing anti-American posters. Another person was wounded, according to reports, when anti-American activists tried to get into the air base at Korat, but were turned back by guards.

The United States has about 21,000 men and 250 aircraft still stationed in Thailand--about one third of the personnel numbers at the height of the Vietnam War. Withdrawals are continuing, with a deadline of March next year set by the Thai Government for the last to leave.
